Employment and Internship Opportunities
Millwright Position
Mill Hollow Heritage Association is seeking a person who will serve as the Millwright for Chase’s Mill. The Millwright’s position is to insure the sustainability of the functional water power system of the Mill. Through the calendar year, the Millwright will monitor and maintain the water power system and all the related parts both inside the Mill and outside. More monitoring will be required during the Mill’s open season from May to October.
Skills needed: Electrical, mechanical aptitude, plumbing tasks, problem solving, communication skills with volunteers, staff, town Selectmen, LWPA, board members.
Required Tasks:
Opening the penstock in the spring, and Closing the penstock in the fall, if that is decided.
Managing the butterfly gate as needed
Maintain adequate water for turbine demonstrations including:
Fill mill pond as needed for tours during dry times by lifting a stop logs in Lake Warren under agreement with the Select Board of Alstead. Involves interfacing and occasionally meeting with Select Board to maintain this agreement.
Each spring meet with the Lake Warren Preservation Association to confirm the guidelines for filling the mill pond from Lake Warren, and review the procedures with the Town of Alstead Select Board and obtain permission.
Mill Pond maintenance:
Flush out the Mill Pond each Spring before the Mill opens to remove organic debris and sediment.
Manage stop logs: replace as needed, maintain ballast as needed, remove and insert as needed to control leakage for maintaining enough water to run the turbines for demonstrations.
Turn on plumbing in the spring and drain it in the fall
Make and repair belts as needed
Grease turbine bearings each year; keep them monitored
Change oil in the line shaft lube baths each year
Adjust and maintain all aspects of the water power system to ensure reliable operation: alignment of shafts, belts and pulleys.
Proper operation of turbines and associated controls.
Maintain shop machinery in good working order, including oil as needed.
Sharpening tools as needed.
Working knowledge of the fire alarm system and how to tun it off.
Dam Condition: Annual dam condition assessment and help with the Dam Safety Bureau annual paperwork.
Keeping a maintenance log including time spent and activities completed.
If needed, assist in filling out appropriate portions of Annual LCHIP Resource Monitoring report with Board chair.
This is an on call/check in position. At this point we are estimation about 100 hours a year. The remuneration for this position is a $5000 stipend from January 1st through to December 31st. Distribution of funds will be determined by agreement between Chase’s Mill and the Millwright at the beginning of each calendar year.

Chase’s Mill is listed on the New Hampshire Register of Historic Places, with foundation stones dating to 1767. The Mill is owned and operated by the Mill Hollow Heritage Association, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization which was formed to purchase and restore this historic building. From 2016 to the present, MHHA has successfully worked to rehabilitate the Mill. In 2021 Chase’s Mill will open as a living museum, workshop, and community center with tools and re- sources that enable community members to make, learn, explore and share.
